Theoretical lexicography as a science in world linguistics was formed in the second half of the
twentieth century. It is known that the basis of Turkic lexicography was laid in the XI century. A special place
in the Turkic linguistics of the Middle Ages, which developed in conjunction with classical Arabic linguistics,
was occupied by the problem of vocabulary formation. The Turkic lexicography, which has the thousand-year
history, began with the famous dictionary «Diwani lugat аt-Turk», prepared by Mahmud Kashgari in the ХІth
century. It is known that this unique dictionary is not only the beginning of a comparative historical study of the
vocabulary of the Turkic languages, but also a valuable source for research in the field of linguistic Turkology.
The article discusses the development of Turkic lexicography, including Turkish lexicography. The first
dictionaries of Turkic lexicography and the history of the creation of Turkish dictionaries are mentioned. It
describes the work and written works of Turkish lexicographers.
