The period of phrase syntax formation in Chinese and Kazakh languages has begun
since 50s. Phrase (word combinations) formation of the Kazakh language as a separate category is directly
related to M. Balakayev, but the phrase of the Chinese language was first mentioned in the labour of Ma
Jianzhong 马氏文通 (Mashiwentong, 1898) and since then information about phrase can be found in books
about Chinese language. However, despite the fact that special attention is paid to the comprehensive study
of phrases in Chinese and Kazakh languages, some problems have not been solved yet, and therefore
the phrase is one of the complex and urgent problems that await a comprehensive study. There are many
controversial issues that are not fully resolved in the Kazakh (especially in the Kazakh language in China)
and Chinese linguistics, namely: phrase definition; combination of notional and functional words to a free
phrase? Can coordinative phrase be accepted as a phrase? Can a predicative combination be accepted as a
phrase? the difference between a phrase, a complex word and sentence; can the phrase be used in a sentence
or outside of a sentence? the methods and types of word combinations links, etc. The article provides a
comparative description of the principles of classification of phrases and ways of combining phrases in
Chinese and Kazakh languages, the similarities and differences of the types and ways of combining phrases
in Chinese and Kazakh languages.
