Abstract

In the context of the modern linguistic paradigm, the current trend in lexicography is its integral
approach in revealing the characteristic features of language units with certain semantics. The article considers
binary oppositions, contained in Russian paroemias and their equivalents in English as lexical material. The article
presents a classification of oppositions in paroemias, compiled by linguistic analysis (analysis of grammatical
structures, semantics, and morphology). There have been used methods of comparative, componential and
descriptive analysis in the study.
The authors propose to classify oppositions in paroemias based on the types of antonymic relations.
According to this model, the authors have analyzed binary oppositions in paroemias in the context of such
aspects as their types and composition of linguistic units involved in the opposition, as well as the type of
opposition of the semantic component of these concepts.
