The article considers the literary heritage of the Karakhan era, the image of the military commander
«Subashy» glorified in the work «Kutadgu bili» by Y. Balasagun. In the work of fiction, the image of the warlord
is presented through the dialogue between Kuntuda and Ugdulmysh. The study was conducted using the work
«Kutadgu bilig» in the Latin transcription compiled by R.R. Arat and its semantic translation into the Kazakh language. The study analysed more than 320 «beyts» and revealed four main aspects. Firstly, the article reveals
the typical image of a military commander. Secondly,there is determined the importance of the commander’s
service and his status in the Karakhan state . Thirdly, it differentiates methods of command, the tactical actions
of the commander, and his place in the governance of the country. Fourthly, there are studied methods of creating
images in medieval literature. The image of «Subashy» created by Yusuf Balasagun serves as a basis for using in
the creation of a work of fiction dedicated to the assessment of middle ages history
